The President’s Message – Autumn 2013

Dear Neighbors,

Busy squirrels hoarding nuts, the changing colors of Fresh Pond, and a touch of cool, brisk air tell us it is autumn in Fort Salonga! As I write, we have just experienced a number of 80 degree days—what a treat to extend the summer by a few weeks. It is my hope this edition of our newsletter finds you and your families well. Certainly the coming of fall has stimulated your Fort Salonga Association’s efforts, as we’ve held a number of recent meetings with our local government representatives.

Update on Local Burglaries

Nov. 8, 2013

Dear Neighbor,

The Fort Salonga Association continues to monitor reports of crime in our community.

According to Lt. Rooney of the 4th Precinct, the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) is investigating recent burglaries, a trio of which occurred during the daytime on October 28. He indicated that SCPD is looking for a gold-colored Honda Accord with Pennsylvania license plates that was spotted in the vicinity of the burglarized homes.

Why We Oppose the Uplands Project

The Fort Salonga Association has joined the chorus of concern expressed by residents and civic associations throughout the town in opposition to the proposed Uplands development.

The proposal by the Society of St. Johnland is to construct almost 200 units designated for senior housing and a four-story parking garage on 50 pristine acres of pond and forest, of which only 21 are likely available for development. This concerns us because of the significant number of zoning changes required to advance the project. Years ago the Town of Smithtown wisely protected this environmentally sensitive parcel, designating it for one acre residential development only.

Roads and Highways: Speeding Concerns, Maintenance, and More

Residents have reached out to the Association to express concerns regarding the speeding on Bread and Cheese Hollow Road. While the accident rate has declined from when it was nicknamed “Brake and Crash Road,” speeding remains a community concern. The recent repaving of Townline Road has created a smooth glidepath into Bread and Cheese, while the VA expansion and widening of Pulaski Road will contribute additional traffic.

Assisted Living Facility at Northport Veterans Affairs

Progress is being made at the Northport VA and its efforts to have an assisted living facility on the Northport campus. The unique program that is fostering the project is called an enhanced-use lease, where and outside contractor would get use of 10-acre plots on the property, one parcel to be built and the other one to be kept green.

This year marks the 100th formal anniversary of the Kings Park Fire Department. Local historian and author Miles Borden has completed his latest edition of its history which he recently presented at the Kings Park library.

Smithtown Affairs: Carlson Property, Open Space, and More

Callahan’s Beach Cell Tower
The Town of Smithtown’s plan to install a cell tower in the parking lot at Callahan’s Beach is currently on hold pending interest from a vendor. We will continue to monitor the proposal.
